Kellen Tavadon, son of the Arch-Mage Lycaelon, thought he knew the way the world worked. His father, leading the wise and benevolent Council of Mages, protected and guided the citizens of the Golden City of the Bells. Young Mages in training---all men, for women were unfit to practice magic---memorized the intricate details of High Magic and aspired to seats on the council.

Then Kellen found the forbidden Books of Wild Magic---or did they find him? Their Magic felt like a living thing, guided by the hearts and minds of those who practiced it and benefited from it. Questioning everything he has known, Kellen discovers too many of the City's dark secrets. Banished, with the Outlaw Hunt on his heels, Kellen invokes Wild Magic---and finds himself running for his life with a unicorn at his side.

Rescued by a unicorn, healed by a female Wild Mage who knows more about Kellen than anyone outside the City should, meeting Elven royalty and Elven warriors, and plunged into a world full of magical beings, Kellen both revels in and fears his new freedom. The one thing all the Mages of the City agreed on was that practicing Wild Magic corrupted a Mage---turned him into a Demon. Would that be Kellen's fate?

Deep in Obsidian Mountain, the Demons are waiting. Since their defeat in the last great War, they've been biding their time, sowing the seeds of distrust and discontent between their human and Elven enemies. Very soon now, when the Demons rise to make war, there will be no alliance between High and Wild Magic to stand against them. And then all the world will belong to the Endarkened.

I can read no more. I don't mind long sentences occasionally in a work, but one every page with questionable verb tenses? I'm done! Only reason I went to the end was to write a review. I'm a highly educated person who loves reading, but when I'm jerked out of a storyline again & again because of having to go back & read the sentence over to get a semblance of understanding makes for an unenjoyable reading experience. I won't be finishing this series. Which is a shame, but I can not do it. I have loved all of Mercedes Lackey ' s book. I have read them all. I don't want this review to be a note against her. I don't think it is. This book is in desperate need of a good editor!

The Outstretched Shadow The Obsidian Trilogy Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Mercedes Lackey James Mallory Susan Ericksen Tantor Audio Books Reviews

I should warn you first that I am a fan of Mercedes Lackey's work, since her filk days. I have not seen any of James Mallory's work. I found this book to be very much like most of Lackey's work; I didn't sense much of Mallory's presence except perhaps in the good characterization of the main character as a teenage boy.
I found this to be a good, fun read. It was engaging and interesting, and it made me want to know what happens next at most points. It's more of a good-vs-evil story than Lackey is prone to; the Endarkened appear to be pure, unredeemable evil and we get plenty of proof of it.
In addition, there's some indication that this world is another one with active, benevolent "gods", which is something that usually drives me right up a wall. However, Lackey handled that well in her Valdemar/Oathbreaker series, so I'll go along with it for now. I won't give anything away here, other than to say that like in her other series, it's a "god" system where you can clearly answer for yourself the big question "If (the) God(s) love us and want to do good by us, why does evil and want and pain exist?" And okay, I admit that I'm also a sucker for world systems where good people with generous hearts can do great good and not get ripped off.
If you're someone who hates to read an unfinished story, you should hold off on this book until the sequels come out. Even though this is a thick long book, it feels more like it ended when it ran out of paper than at a natural endpoint of the story. I think I agree with another reviewer in that it needed to be edited. Unless there's something further on to give a payoff to it, we spend entirely too much time getting our heroes to the point where they even KNOW about the major foes, much less start to do something about it. It's something I've noticed in many of Lackey's books from the last 5 years or so; perhaps she has become resistant to editing and her work is suffering for it. While I appreciate learning about our characters and their world... it means that the "main" plot doesn't start until around page 400 of 600!
Overall, I like this book even though it spends way too much time setting things up. I like watching the characters develop, and there are interesting things to see along the way. This book is also suitable for children from about age 10 and up. The sexual situations are not at all disturbing, and violence is handled as something to be avoided. And most of all, our main character's thoughts about both can lead to healthy decision-making. However the actions of the Endarkened might be too much for children younger than 10 to handle.
Enjoyed the tale. A very talented writer, the magic sytem is thought out and I like how the system works. The character's are very likable and the villains sometimes I just want skip over..very creepy enough to make my skin crawl.Like all good tales it starts abit slow with a good foundation and necessary character development.then slowly unravels revealing a Journey that many a hero follows.. Can't wait to read the second book
I have bought this book 3 times and will continue to buy it for a re read every time I loan it out without a return or it gets lost in a move. This is a fantastic book and series. It has been a top 5 of mine since it's first printing. It is hard to stay in the top 5 when up against the likes of "Lord of the Rings", The first Shannara trilogy and Jack Whyte's Camulod Chronicles But the Obsidian Trilogy does this and more. It is fantastic. Give it a try.
I havent read any books previously written by Mercedes Lackey, and I havent read the Merlin books penned my Mallory. I might have been living under a rock, but for some reason the two authors never registered on my radar. This book was recommended to me by a coworker after we discussed the novels that we both like to read.

This book is the start of a high-fantasy trilogy, and I must say that it fits the vein very well. It is a serious book, filled with the elements that make this subgenre so prominent. In this novel you will find wizards, elves, centaurs, other fey folk, and a great struggle against a very powerful enemy.

The book starts off a little slower paced for my liking, but by sticking with it, you are filled in on some great backstory and little pieces that make the world that Lackey and Mallory have conjured seems just outside the realm of reality.

I enjoyed this book and was pleased with its conclusion. The book, as mentioned earlier, started slow, but then rushed headlong into a fitting climax and conclusion. I have promptly picked up the second novel in the series and am happily devouring it as we speak.

I reccomend this novel to lovers of fantasy fiction, readers of Salvator, Greenwood, Lewis, and others who have populated the genre with memorable characters and great stories. Its a good read, just hunker down for the first 200 or so pages and let the story develop at its own satisfying pace.
I have found Ms. Lackey's novels somewhat hit or miss in the past (for my taste at least). Some I've loved, others I had a hard time finishing. This one a really enjoyed though. Perhaps it does not bring anything new to the epic fantasy genre, but the authors have woven the old stereotypes together well and combined them into an exciting story. The only two minor criticisms I might offer are that the conflicts are rather black and white, and the protagonist's worrying and refusal to ask questions does get a little tedious at times. Still a good book overall and I will definitely be reading the other two novels in this trilogy.
This is a fantastic book of magic and action! The magic is simple and deeply intricate, the world is storied with layers of history and the characters are vibrant and memorable. Any lover of high fantasy should read this.
